Will My Dental Implant Treatment Hurt?

A dental implant treatment involves surgically anchoring titanium posts to your jawbone, which probably sounds like it will hurt! Many patients are surprised to find that the process is actually tolerable – comfortable, even.

It’s true; thanks to modern technology (and the fact that the jaw has very few nerve endings), a dental implant treatment isn’t painful for most patients. To get a better idea of what to expect, just keep scrolling!

Discomfort During Dental Implant Surgery

The very first thing your dentist will do when you’re settled into the patient’s chair is administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. This is the same anesthetic that’s used for tooth extractions and root canals, so it’s quite effective! You should only feel some mild pressure as your dentist makes a small incision in your gums, places the implant, and sutures the incision closed. Once every implant is secure, you’ll be free to go.

Soreness After Dental Implant Surgery

Where you’re more likely to experience discomfort is after your treatment, when the anesthetic wears off. Some patients find that taking ibuprofen an hour or two before their appointment helps mitigate post-surgery soreness. If you’re considering doing this, be sure to ask your dentist whether the medicine will interact with the anesthetic. Either way, it should be perfectly safe for you to take pain relievers as needed once you return home.

Applying a cold compress to the sore area can also provide relief and a moderate numbing effect. Just be very careful when pressing it to your jaw so you don’t disturb the implant site.

Completing Your Treatment

It’ll take a couple of months for your jawbone and gums to completely heal, but once you’ve recovered, your dentist will call you back to the office to complete your dental implant treatment. Don’t worry – attaching your restoration to the dental implants is a quick and simple process. Patients rarely even need an anesthetic. Your dentist might ask you to bite down or move your jaw so they can make sure your restoration fits and functions well. And then that will be it! You’ll officially have a brand-new smile.

Remember, your dental team wants you to feel confident in your treatment. If you’re concerned about pain or other aspects of the dental implant process, don’t hesitate to let them know. They’ll work with you closely to make sure you’re comfortable during your visit.
